As working at the ward as a staff nurse and facing with a patient with papillary thyroid cancer is kind of challenging part of nursing responsibilities that may affect our profession. We may expose to hazardous due to the diagnostic test such as imaging or ionizing radiation as explained above. Thus an appropriate shielding must be applied during performing the involving diagnostic test with other health care provider to prevent from the side effect of the procedure or choose an enough distance that could minimize the radiation. As we know the Ionizing radiation damages tissue by causing ionization, which disrupts molecules directly and also produces highly reactive free radicals, which attack nearby cells (Wikipedia, August 2010). It is not only attacking the cancerous cell but also the normal cell of human who exposed with it. Sometimes, long and recurrent exposure of ionizing radiation may lead to genetic damage, tumors and several cancers such as thyroid cancer. So it is better to prevent from being seriously exposed with ionizing radiation rather than cure its side effect. The more the exposure, the higher the risk for getting the side effect.
Furthermore, it is important for us to stress or give better understanding to the patient about the thyroid cancer sign and symptoms and ways to prevent from getting it. It is not only for the patient in the ward but also for people who at risk to get thyroid cancer to minimize the rate of patient with thyroid cancer. Perhaps this action can be done under collaboration with Environmental Health Company. Campaign or awareness talk about dangerous effect of radiation can be held to contractors, labors, industry factory workers or whoever that have a high risk of thyroid cancer. Health education should be implemented with Dietetic and Nutritional group to educate society about the advantages and disadvantages of taking sufficient level of iodine in human body requirement. Thus this will affect our nursing responsibilities. If we look at this side, nursing responsibilities range become wider means the nursing care not only focus to the patient but also including the society.
According to the factors related to women and reproduction about miscarriages women that have a risk to get thyroid cancer. Some of the studies agree with the opinion as sited in Experts Debate Benefits and Costs of Thyroid Screening in Pregnancy by American Thyroid Association, April 2004. However according to Preston-Martin, 1987 research show that number of cases of young women without miscarriage are higher than women who are not for thyroid cancer. In my opinion, miscarriage may be one of the factors that indicate the presence of thyroid cancer but only few of patients are involve not as a main factors that contributes to thyroid cancer.
